We left from the Urangan Marina in Hervey Bay at 2.30pm on Monday 13th March to motor sail to Lady Musgrave Island in the Capricorn Bunker Group with a strong wind warning current. With only a mainsail we expected Drumbeat to be drastically unbalanced in the following wind and waves, but she was really quite directionally stable. The autopilot handled the steering all the way, with one engine running to keep us balanced. The winds and waves built up as we closed on the reef at about midnight, but at least there was a near full moon to see a bit of what we really didn't want to see! As the winds built to around 30 knots we put the second reef in the main. We anchored behind the reef, and spent the night sleeping fitfully as we 'wound down'.
The next morning we made our way through the narrow pass into the lagoon, where we anchored for a few days. We enjoyed some fantatstic snorkelling, and a walk on the island, which is home to a multitude of birds, some of which were nesting.
We walked among the trees, often breaking through the soft build up of leaf litter (and bird droppings!)
